From 23 to 24 April 2025, the SPREP team conducted Traditional Knowledge (TK) training at the Tuvalu Meteorological Service (TMS) Conference Room. This two-day training was specifically targeted at Tuvalu Met staff. During the sessions, the SPREP team guided TMS staff on how to use and interpret the survey questionnaire. The focus of the training was on the use of traditional methods for forecasting and responding to climate extremes and geohazards. While this particular training was conducted over two days, the broader Traditional Knowledge training program will continue for two weeks. The aim of the training is to strengthen understanding of the TK process and protocols related to climate and weather. It also seeks to establish training resources and best practices for collecting Traditional Knowledge on weather, climate, and geohazards in Tuvalu.
One of the key goals is to develop a plan to establish traditional climate and weather indicators that are collated and verified locally. Furthermore, the training aims to demonstrate how traditional forecasting methods can be incorporated into early warning systems, and to develop communication tools—such as videos —to better inform the public about climate and geohazard warnings. A big FAKAFETAI LASI to the SPREP team for the training through COSPPac and UNEP CISPPac5 and their continued support to the Tuvalu Meteorological Service
